Ingredients

3 barspoon Orange marmalade
2 oz Gin
1/2 oz Lemon juice
1/4 oz Sugar syrup 'rich' (2:1)
1 dash Orange bitters
3 drop Saline solution 4:1

How to make

Serve in a coupe glass

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a COUPE GLASS.
  2. 2 Prepare garnish of orange zest twist.

Method

  1. 3 STIR 3 flat barspoons of marmalade (15-20ml) with other ingredients in base of shaker to dissolve the marmalade.
  2. 4 SHAKE with ice.
  3. 5 FINE STRAIN into chilled glass.

Garnish

  1. 6 EXPRESS orange zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

History

Harry Craddock's 1930 book states, "By its bitter-sweet taste this cocktail is especially suited to be a luncheon aperitif."

This cocktail first appeared in the 1925 publication Drinks Long & Short, compiled by Nina Toye and A. H. Adair. Nicola Piazza is credited with its discovery. Five years later, it was also featured in Harry Craddock's well-known The Savoy Cocktail Book. MARMALADE COCKTAIL This is a sweet yet subtly bitter drink, making it particularly fitting as a luncheon aperitif. The cocktail is prepared with two tablespoonfuls of marmalade, specifically Cooper's Oxford Marmalade, the juice from one large or two small lemons, and four glasses of gin. After shaking vigorously, a piece of fresh orange peel should be squeezed over each serving. MARMALADE COCKTAIL. (Serves 6) With its characteristic sweet and bitter flavor profile, this cocktail is especially well-suited as a luncheon aperitif. To prepare, combine the following ingredients in a shaker: 2 Dessertspoonsful Orange Marmalade. The Juice of 1 big or 2 small Lemons. 4 Glasses Gin. Shake the mixture thoroughly and then strain, expressing a piece of orange rind over each glass before serving.
