History
A savoury, sweet and sour beer with lively chilli heat. If a beer lacks refreshment on a hot day, this may be suitable.
The name "Michelada" is thought to be a portmanteau of the Spanish "mi chela helada," which roughly translates to "my cold beer." The term "chela" is Mexican slang for beer, and "helada" means cold. This drink is believed to have originated in Mexico in the 1940s and has since become a popular beverage there. Variations of the Michelada abound, with some recipes calling for ice and others omitting it. While typically prepared with a light Mexican lager, a darker beer is preferred for this version. The spicy components also differ, with Worcestershire sauce sometimes left out, though hot pepper sauce is a consistent element. In Mexico City specifically, a "Michelada" commonly refers to a simpler concoction: a shot of fresh lime juice in a glass with a salted rim, into which a light lager is poured.
