History

Whisky and water are the sole ingredients; as with the Japanese tea ceremony, the contemplation of its preparation and the prolonged anticipation enhance the finished drink. An Old Fashioned appears to take a long time in comparison.

The name "Mizuwari" is pronounced "Miz-Zoo-Wah-ri." "Mizu" means water and "wari" means divide, indicating that whisky is simply diluted with water and served over ice. The precise ratio is a matter of personal preference for both the drinker and the bartender, typically ranging from 1:2.5 to 1:4 whisky to water. In Japan, Mizuwari is commonly consumed with meals instead of wine, as its light whisky notes complement Japanese cuisine exceptionally well. The serving vessels are extremely thin and delicate, with the glass's thickness and quality considered essential to the Mizuwari experience in Japan.
