History

When well made, this Cuban cocktail is a refreshing classic.

The Mojito's origins are a bit murky, with some accounts tracing its lineage back to the 16th century. Sir Francis Drake is often credited with a drink called 'El Draque,' a concoction of aguardiente, lime, and mint, served to ward off scurvy. However, no definitive proof links this to the modern Mojito. The name 'Mojito' itself is believed to derive from the African slave word 'mojo,' meaning to cast a spell. The earliest confirmed written reference to a drink called the Mojito appears in the 1930s in Havana, Cuba. It was a popular drink in Havana's bars, including the famous La Bodeguita del Medio, where it is said that Ernest Hemingway was a regular patron and enjoyed the drink. The cocktail gained international fame in the late 20th century, solidifying its status as a classic.
