- 1 Select and pre-chill a MARTINI (LARGE 10OZ) GLASS.
- 2 Prepare garnish of ground black pepper.
Method
- 3 SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
- 4 STRAIN into glass filled with crushed ice.

- 5 Dust with freshly ground black pepper.

History
Vodka, orange, basil, and red berries combine in a balanced, easy-drinking fruity cocktail – perhaps too easy for a drink with a name that suggests "having your brains smashed in by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick." As advised by Beeblebrox, "never drink more than two Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters unless you are a thirty ton mega elephant with bronchial pneumonia."
This recipe, based on the Basil Grande, is for the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, created around 2011 by Christos Chouseas at his Athens, Greece bar, Bar 42. Many drink names at Bar 42 were inspired by Douglas Adams' work. In Adams' book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the number 42 is presented as the "answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything." The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is described in the Guide as the "Best Drink in Existence." The guide attributes the original invention of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster to Zaphod Beeblebrox, former President of the Universe, who is quoted as saying, "After two of those babies, the dullest, most by-the-book Vogon will be up on the bar in stilettos, yodeling mountain shanties and swearing he's the king of the Gray Binding Fiefdoms of Saxaquine."
