History

This cocktail is fruity yet spirit-forward. Despite its ingredients suggesting significant sweetness, the dilution from shaking with crushed ice tempers it, though it remains spirituous. Victor Bergeron is quoted as saying, "This'll tuck you away neatly - and pick you up and throw you right to the floor."

The Pancho Villa cocktail is named for Francisco Villaruel Guilledo (1901-1925), a Filipino professional boxer known as Pancho Villa. He stood 154cm (5 feet 1 inch) tall and weighed 51kg (114 pounds) at his heaviest. In 1923, he became the first Asian boxer to win the World Flyweight Championship. He never suffered a knockout in his career and is considered one of the greatest Flyweight boxers ever. His life ended abruptly at age 23 due to complications after a tooth extraction. The earliest known appearance of the Pancho Villa cocktail is in Charles H. Baker, Jr.'s 1939 book, The Gentleman's Companion volume II – An Exotic Drinking Book. The version presented here is derived from Victor Bergeron's 1947 Bartender's Guide by Trader Vic, a recipe that was also included in his 1972 Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide. A CLASSIC cocktail from the PHILIPPINES, the PANCHO VILLA COCKTAIL, was first encountered by us in 1926. This late Filipino gentleman, a national hero in Manila where his monument stands, was possibly the finest fighter for his size. When Monk Antrim's Chino Number One created this drink in his honor, it was deemed exceptional enough for inclusion. Carta de Oro Bacardi, 1 pony Dry apricot brandy, 1 pony Pineapple juice, 1 tsp Dry gin, 1 pony Cherry brandy, 1 tsp Stuffed olive This drink is sweet and requires to be served extremely cold. The shaker should be filled with fine ice, and the contents poured into a large champagne glass. It is one of the rare cocktails with a combination of seemingly contradictory ingredients that is truly worthwhile. PANCHO VILLA COCKTAIL 1 oz.
