History

Port and brandy served neat and garnished.

The drink emerged as a classic during the initial years of the 1900s. In 1900, Frank Newman included a recipe for a "Port Wine Cocktail" within his French publication, American-Bar Recettes des Boissons Anglaises & Américaines. Its translation into English reads: "Glass #5 Take a #1 mixing glass, four or five small pieces of ice: 3 dashes of angostura, 2 dashes of orange bitters. Finish with red or white port; stir, strain, pour, serve."
