History

A Negroni with dashes of absinthe.

The Quill first appeared in the 1996 edition of Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails. In this edition, Andrew & Duncan MacElhone included over 40 new cocktails alongside Harry MacElhone's original works. The Quill is not present in earlier editions of Harry's books. The 1996 edition attributes the recipe to "Frank C. Payne, New York". Payne was part of a group of theatrical press agents who established the Theatrical Press Representatives of America (TPROA) in 1930. This organization served as a union to advocate for their interests, and they promoted it through a magazine named The Quill.
