History
A Dry Martini made two-to-one, sweetened and flavoured with cherry brandy.
Appearing in Harry Craddock's 1930 publication, The Savoy Cocktail Book, as "Rose Cocktail (French Style No. 1.)", this drink is also found in the 1929 book Cocktails de Paris. In that earlier text, under the name "Rose du Roy", it is attributed to Charles, a bartender at the Pavillon Henry IV hotel in St-Germain, Paris. The recipe in Cocktails de Paris uses slightly less gin than the Savoy version. This same notation states that the cocktail earned the "Cup of Honour" at the Professional Bartenders Championship, which took place in Paris on 2nd February 1929. ROSE COCKTAIL (FRENCH STYLE NO. 1.) ¼ Cherry Brandy. ¼ French Vermouth. ½ Dry Gin. Stir well and strain into cocktail glass.
