Ingredients

1 2/3 oz Vodka
1 2/3 oz Pink grapefruit juice
1/6 oz Sugar syrup 'rich' (2:1)
4 drop Grapefruit bitters
4 drop Saline solution 4:1

How to make

Serve in a fizz or highball (8oz to 10oz)

Prepare

  1. 1 Select and pre-chill a FIZZ OR HIGHBALL (8OZ TO 10OZ) GLASS.
  2. 2 RIM glass with salt (moisten outside edge with grapefruit juice and dip into salt).
  3. 3 Prepare garnish of grapefruit wedge.
  4. 4 Prepare garnish of grapefruit slice wheel.

Method

  1. 5 SHAKE all ingredients with ice.
  2. 6 STRAIN into ice-filled glass.

History

This is a superbly cleansing and refreshing cocktail, suitable for breakfast or an evening aperitivo. The previous recipe used 50ml vodka, 15ml maraschino and 50ml grapefruit juice. Maraschino is not traditionally an ingredient in this vintage cocktail.

A cocktail that emerged in the late 1950s or early 1960s, its earliest known recipe appears in Ted Saucier's 1962 book, Bottom's Up: New and Revised Edition. Ted Saucier's Bottom's Up presents the Salty Dog as follows: SALTY DOG 1 jigger Vodka 4 ozs. unsweetened grapefruit juice Dash of salt Ice Place ingredients in highball glass. Stir and serve. Another version, also presented as SALTY DOG, instructs the user to build the drink in a highball glass filled with ice cubes and rimmed in coarse granule salt: SALTY DOG Build in highball glass filled with ice cubes and rimmed in coarse granule salt. 1 ½ ounces Vodka Fill with Grapefruit juice (usually unsweetened) A third recipe for SALTY DOG calls for: SALTY DOG 2 ozs. vodka ½ oz. unsalted grapefruit juice 1 teaspoon lemon juice Salt Shake vodka, grapefruit juice and lemon juice well with ice. Strain into prechilled cocktail glass. Sprinkle drink with several generous dashes of salt.
