History
A Sweet Manhattan with brandy influence is best thrown, and drunk while the bubbles still rest.
This cocktail is adapted from a recipe found in the Jerry Thomas' Bar-tenders Guide, published posthumously in 1887, following Jerry "The Professor" Thomas's death on December 15th, 1885. The drink's name originates from Saratoga Springs, New York. This city became a popular resort destination due to its mineral springs and the opening of the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad in 1832. Hotels proliferated, and Saratoga was described as "the 19th century's east coast equivalent of Las Vegas." At that time, the city's Grand Union Hotel was the largest hotel globally. Saratoga Cocktail. (Use small bar glass.) Take 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. 1 pony of brandy. 1 pony of whiskey. 1 pony of Vermouth. Shake up well with two small lumps of ice; strain into a claret glass, and serve with a quarter of a slice of lemon.
