Flavour profile
History
A gin sour, influenced by Tiki drinks, featuring passion fruit and almond.
José "Popo" Valencia Galsini, a Filipino immigrant who achieved renown as a bartender in California, is credited with inventing the Saturn. He devised the drink in 1969 while employed at Palms In The Jungle restaurant in Anaheim, and it secured his victory in the International Bartender's Association World Championship that same year. The cocktail was initially christened X-15, drawing its name from the North American Aviation rocket spaceplane. Popo later changed the name of his drink to honor the third of these experimental planes, which crashed on November 15, 1967. The pilot lost in the incident, Major Michael J. Adams, received astronaut wings posthumously; his flight had surpassed the altitude recognized by NASA as the boundary of space before the aircraft broke apart. Contemporary bartenders became familiar with the Saturn through the efforts of Jeff "Beachbum" Berry. He obtained the recipe from a commemorative glass discovered in a second-hand shop in California. Following his investigation into the cocktail and its creator, Berry featured the Saturn in his 2010 book, Beachbum Berry Remixed.
