The Sir Walter, also known as the Swalter, is first documented in Harry MacElhone's 1927 Barflies and Cocktails. It also appears in The Savoy Cocktail Book from 1930. Speculation exists as to whether the cocktail honors Sir Walter Raleigh or Sir Walter Scott.
