History

Sugar balances citrus acidity, the spirit fortifies, and carbonation lengthens.

The term 'Sling' is derived from the German word 'schlingen,' which means 'to swallow.' Slings, spirits mixed with sugar and water, were commonly consumed in the late 1800s. Slings share similarities with Toddies and, like Toddies, can be served hot. However, Toddies are never served cold. The primary distinction between a Toddy and a Sling is the absence of added spices in Slings. Furthermore, while Toddies are typically made with plain water, Slings are enhanced with water, soda water, or ginger ale. The earliest known description of a 'cocktail' defines it as a bittered sling. Also see: Cocktail Categories & Families
