This vintage cocktail, known as either Sloppy Joe or Sloppy Joe's, is believed to originate from or be named after Sloppy Joe's, a well-known bar in Havana, Cuba, popular in the 1930s. Ernest Hemingway was a frequent patron, and his novel To Have and Have Not featured the fictitious Freddy's Bar, inspired by this establishment. The recipe below is adapted from Stanley M. Jones' 1977 publication, Jones' Complete Barguide.
