History

A straightforward smoky malt and cola. Bitters or a twist add subtle but welcome embellishments.

While the Jack & Coke is a famous combination, Scotch whisky was previously limited to soda water or perhaps ginger ale. In his 2014 book, Whisky: The Manual, Dave Broom explored the best mixers for various Scotch whiskies, testing everything from soda water to green tea. His discovery that Lagavulin is delicious with cola led to the creation of the Smoky Cokey. Colin Dunn, Diageo's whisky ambassador, later served 35ml of Lagavulin 16 Year Old topped with almost flat cola in Martini glasses at the 2000 Feis Ile (Islay whisky festival). He presented these to guests on the Lagavulin pier. Colin Dunn discussed what he had by then named the "Smoky Cokey" at a Diageo World Class event around 2016. Dave Broom discovered this delightful pairing of whisky and cola, and it is Colin Dunn who elevated the Smoky Cokey to contemporary classic status.
