History
This 1915 recipe calls for equal parts gin, applejack, and grenadine, with a smaller amount of lemon juice. The proportions of 1/3 for each of the main ingredients and 1/6 for the lemon juice result in a drink that is quite sweet, especially with modern 2:1 grenadine. It is uncertain what the brix of the original grenadine or pomegranate syrup was. The grenadine has been reduced to better suit contemporary ingredients. The resulting cocktail, which benefits from a touch of water to achieve proper dilution, is best suited as a spirituous, fruity after-dinner drink rather than an aperitif.
This recipe is adapted from a version published in The Washington Herald in 1915.
