History
This 4:2:8 formula is a tad sourer than the classic 3:4:8. If the formula proves too sour, follow the classic proportions in future.
The name 'Sour' is quite fitting for this category of cocktails. Their defining characteristic is a balance of either lemon or lime juice with sugar. While Sours can be crafted with virtually any spirit, the Whiskey Sour, built on bourbon, stands out as the most common choice. A common belief, held by many, is that this drink achieves its optimal texture with the addition of a small amount of egg white. Sours are typically presented either 'straight-up' in a sour glass, resembling a petite flute, or 'on the rocks' in an old-fashioned glass. The traditional garnishes include a cherry and an orange slice, though a lemon slice is sometimes substituted.
