History

Vodka with sour lemon juice balances rich almond syrup for a candy-like cocktail.

This drink is adapted from a recipe created by Mario Da Como at The Renaissance Bar, Badrutt's Palace Hotel, St. Moritz, Switzerland. He was the head bartender there from December 1963 to April 2008, a tenure of 44 years 5 months. The original version, the San Moritzino Cocktail, was first made by Mario in 1972. Andrea Badrutt, the hotel's Director, had received a "noble rum" from South Africa as a gift. Because of an embargo in place at the time, the rum could not be sold. Mario mixed it with Cointreau, fresh lime, and orzata (orgeat syrup) to create the initial version of what would become the hotel's signature cocktail. As vodka gained popularity, the rum-based San Moritzino evolved into the St. Moritzino, which continues to be the hotel's signature cocktail.
