History

An Old Fashioned variation using rum and port instead of sugar.

This drink originated at the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, the site now occupied by the Empire State Building. It was created for James R Keene, an owner of racehorses whose steeds competed in the Suburban Handicap at Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay track. Albert Stevens Crockett's 1931 book, Old Waldorf Bar Days, features the Suburban.
