History

Brandy is brightened with orange and lemon. Richness balances tart citrus. Popular with South African safari-goers, it uses local brandy and Van der Hum orange liqueur.

Popular among the safari community in South Africa, where it is typically made with local brandy and an orange liqueur named Van der Hum, this recipe is adapted from Lucius Beebe's 1946 book, The Stork Club Bar Book. Beebe's "Sundowner" recipe calls for: "1½ oz. brandy. ¾ oz Van Der Hum liqueur. 4 dashes lemon juice. 4 dashes orange juice. Shake and serve in 3 oz. cocktail glass."
