History

This zesty citrus 1970s Tequila Sunrise looks the part and has a sweet treat at the bottom.

This is a variation on the Tequila Sunrise, which originated in the 1930s. Bobby "Robert" Lozoff, then a 22 year-old rookie bartender, created it in 1970 at the Trident in Sausalito, California, USA. The Trident was a favorite haunt of rock 'n' roll stars. One Monday night in June 1972, the Trident, which was normally closed on Mondays, hosted a private Rolling Stones American Tour kick-off party. While Mick Jagger waited at the bar for the Margarita he had ordered, Lozoff asked if he had tried a Tequila Sunrise. Jagger said he had not, so Lozoff made one of his signature drinks. Jagger found the taste pleasing and noted its simplicity, which would allow the band to make it while on tour. Keith Richards states in his 2010 book Life, chapter nine, "The '72 tour was known by other names-the Cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour." The drink's popularity led to its appearance on the back label of Jose Cuervo bottles. Later, in April 1973, the Eagles released their song Tequila Sunrise.
