In 18th century London, gin was typically mixed with water in a two-to-one ratio and sold by the quarter pint. Another popular mixture was the Purl, made simply with gin and ale. For a 'hot purl', the beer was sometimes warmed first, a variation that was apparently favored by Thames boatmen of that era.
