History
Bone dry with faint anise and liquorice from the absinthe.
The Tuxedo Cocktail No. 1 draws its lineage from the pages of two foundational cocktail books: Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book, first published in 1930, and Patrick Gavin Duffy's The Official Mixer's Manual, with editions from 1934 and 1940. Craddock's 1930 edition of The Savoy Cocktail Book features a recipe for the Tuxedo Cocktail, which is rendered as follows: "TUXEDO COCKTAIL. (No. 1.) 1 Piece Lemon Peel. 2 Dashes Absinthe. ½ French Vermouth. ½ Dry Gin. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass." The instructions for Tuxedo Cocktail No. 1, as presented, are to combine one piece of lemon peel with two dashes of absinthe, half a measure of French vermouth, and half a measure of dry gin. These ingredients should be shaken with ice and then strained into a glass. The intended glassware is identified as glass number 1, which corresponds to a Nick & Nora glass. Further information regarding the history of the Tuxedo cocktail may be available elsewhere.
