History
A small amount of sherry dramatically impacts the finished cocktail. Fino or manzanilla sherries work best.
The Tuxedo cocktail's origins can be traced to recipes found in Paul E. Lowe's "Drinks As They Are Mixed" from 1904 and Jacques-Straub's "Drinks" published in 1914. A preparation method for the Tuxedo Cocktail suggests using a mixing glass filled with fine ice. To this, add 1 dash of Angostura bitters, 1 barspoonful of sherry wine, ½ jigger of Italian vermouth, and ¾ jigger of Tom gin. The mixture should be stirred and then strained into a cocktail glass before serving. Another version, also called the Tuxedo Cocktail, calls for 1 dash of maraschino, 3 dashes of Angostura bitters, 1 dash of absinthe, 2/3 jigger of dry gin, 1/3 jigger of French vermouth, and 1 barspoon of sherry wine. This iteration requires stirring well.
