History
This cocktail features gin and dry apricot. On the 4th of September 2022, the volume of a previous recipe was reduced by 25%, and sugar syrup was omitted to better align with classic versions that call for lemon juice (though lime is preferred). The prior recipe consisted of: 60ml (2oz) gin, 30 (1oz) apricot brandy, 22.5ml (¾oz) dry vermouth, 7.5ml (¼oz) lime juice, 5ml (1 spoon) sugar syrup.
This recipe originates from Stanley M. Jones' 1977 book, Jones' Complete Barguide. The "WHAT THE HELL" cocktail is served in a cocktail glass and stirred. The ingredients are 3/4 oz gin, 3/4 oz dry vermouth, 3/4 oz apricot flavoured brandy, and 1/4 oz lemon juice.
