History

With sunny colour and tropical flavour, the rum-based Yellow Bird evokes the Caribbean. Ripe banana and peppermint freshness from two liqueurs most influence this lightly Tiki cocktail.

The drink may be named for its golden-yellow color or possibly after the 19th-century Haitian song "Choucoune." This song was adapted with English lyrics and retitled "Yellow Bird" in the mid-1950s. Norman Luboff and his choir first recorded it in a calypso style in 1957. While the Mills Brothers' 1959 recording achieved modest success, it was Arthur Lyman, a Hawaiian singer, whose version reached No. 4 on the Billboard charts in July 1961. It is suggested that this record was frequently played at Shell Bar in The Hawaii Village, inspiring the creation of this cocktail there.
