History

Zaza is a diminutive of Isabela. However, there is nothing diminutive about this classic cocktail, apart from its simple ingredients.

The Zaza Cocktail, named after a successful French play from the turn of the 20th century that later inspired opera and film adaptations, is featured in Hon. William "Cocktail Bill" Boothby's 1908 book, The World's Drinks And How To Mix Them. The recipe provided in Boothby's work states: "FRENCH. Half Dubonnet and half dry English gin, cooled well and served in a vermouth or cocktail-glass, is known as a Zaza Cocktail in all French cafés." Additionally, the Zaza appears in Harry Craddock's significant 1930 publication, The Savoy Cocktail Book, with the following instructions: "ZAZA COCKTAIL. ½ Dubonnet. ½ Dry Gin. Shake well and strain into cocktail glass."
