About this bottle

Warenghem Distillery has been situated on the coast of Brittany, a coastal land with ties to Celtic history, since around 1900. In the 1990s, they started producing Armorik single malt. This Armorik Sherry Finish expression spends most of its maturation in ex-bourbon barrels and is finished for a few months in ex-sherry casks.

The nose starts with a Twix candy bar dunked in a glass of sherry then buttermilk biscuits topped with heavily peppered gravy followed by toasted walnuts, fruits of freeze dried grapes, baked apple, and orange creamsicle that transitions to cloves, light leather and polished oak with light ethanol burn. The taste is a thin mouthfeel starting with creamy butterscotch pudding and stewed orchard fruits before quickly veering towards a medium spicy dark chocolate mocha that slowly fades to toasted walnuts, fruits of prunes, baked apple pie, and orange zest that transition to cloves, light leather and moderate ashy oak with medium ethanol burn. The finish is medium length with dark chocolate, musty grape, grapefruit, burnt walnuts, mild sulfur, cloves and lightly ashy oak. This is a very enjoyable whisky that managed to combine those sherry and bourbon casks well, but is slightly spicier on the palate than I’d prefer and the 40% ABV thins those fruity flavors. I like this a lot more than the other French whisky I’ve tried from Brenne and think with a higher ABV and some age this can be something incredible. A huge thank you to @Richard-ModernDrinking for the generous sample.

Vive le whiskey Français, and what a great discover! The thing about sherry is that it isn't unlike a hairpiece. If you have a full set of hair and use a hairpiece as extensions, the finished look is natural and seamless. But if you're bald and walking around with a toupee... you're only fooling yourself. Point is: this is a great whiskey because the new-made spirit was well-crafted before aging, and you can tell. The sherry... just a wonderful bonus. From start to finish both the nose and palate are complex and delicious with predictable fruity notes , and the finish is smooth and long. Bravo!

Viva la France! My first French whiskey ( you never forget your first, right?). Courtesy of Richard. This I believe comes from Breton, where the dialect is distinctly non-typical French and the distance to the U.K. is a mere tunnel ride. It's also where crepes were invented, so there you go---this already looks promising. Aromas of hazelnuts and raisins. Palette is more nuts and dark berries, almost Christmas-y spices. I wish this had more time to age---I'm going to be a buyer of this at a mature age statement. Thanks Richard!

I wanted to drink some French whiskey while in France. Armorik was one brand which I had sought out, but was a little difficult to find. Cinnamon raisins and vanilla on the nose gives a hint of gingerbread. Palate is peppery and warm with a pleasant mouthfeel. The finish is where this whiskey shines. At 46% it lingers and brings flavors of nuts, candied oranges, chocolate and pepper. It’s difficult to get all the flavors this has to offer from a disposable hotel cup.

This charming dram greets you with a beautiful combination of apricots, leather, tobacco and sherry on the nose. The palate is a gentle medley of raisins, walnuts, roasted coffee and hint of citrus. The finish is long, warm and features a certain je-ne-sais-quoi from the oak spice. Overall, a fragrant, complex and delicious dram. Merci et bravo!

A strong sherry and black pepper nose. Hints of orange and blackcurrant. A rich almost brandy like taste. Quite sweet, fruity, almost sangria like. A very strong sherry taste. Short finish with some spice. Mainly sweetness though.
