On the countdown of my last remaining samples (I believe a kind benefactor in the form of one PBM will be remedying my sample scarcity plight god and customs willing)...no 4. Damn fine whisky. Very rich spicey sherried nose. Brilliant flavouring. Spice, spice and more spice from the European oak. Rich cinnamon chocolate prune and cherry and an aftertaste which lingers for eternity. Now the one fault is it's very slightly thin of body..water rather than oil based if that makes sense however the overall taste and that never ending aftertaste move it from a 4.25 to a 4.5 then by the end 4.5 to 4.75 territory. The average rating here and on whiskey base is the highest I've ever seen (for a large number of reviews). Not sure it's nirvana but it's a brilliant whisky with perfect balance and amazing flavour. I'm sure I saw it round the $250USD mark once here but now not around in NZ and overseas its closer to the $350USD mark. If you have that money to spend on whisky buy with confidence...I reckon with more time open and a number more samplings it may have had a chance of creeping slightly higher score wise into the very rare solid 4.75 territory. With a bit of water and 45 mins it really went up a notch. I had a single cask Glendronach post which I thought would best it but nope I was still pining for this one!
About this bottle
A new addition to the Glengoyne core range, this single malt bottling has spent a quarter of a century maturing in first-fill European oak sherry casks kept in traditional dunnage-style warehouses. Owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, the Glengoyne Distillery is located in the Scottish Highlands. It prides itself in using the longest distillation in Scotland, which prolongs the interaction between the spirit and the still. The malt is non-chill filtered, but may contain additional coloring. Bottled at 48% ABV.

What can I say, to date (19.06.2020) the best whisky I have ever drunk. Complex yet very balanced, non-challenging: the substance is that it cannot fail to please. The constant I found is hazelnut chocolate, gianduia type, which accompanies the nose, palate and finish. Then a mixture of honey, caramel, sherry and sticky toffee pudding for those who know it. The finish is infinite, light and sweet, with a pinch of pleasure on the tongue. In short, I found my masterpiece.
Nose - Syrupy raisins/prunes/dates, light sweet almonds, dark toffee, mulled red wine, hints of chocolate covered cherries. Taste - Sweet ginger/white pepper spice, syrupy dark but refreshing dark dried stone fruits, dark toffee, lightly tannic, fresh bing cherries. Finish - Long lasting dark fruity sweet, dark toffee, ginger spice, chocolate sweet, fresh bing cherries. Score - 95/100 Final Thoughts - This is quite spectacular and what I imagine a well done sherried dram should be. Very nicely balanced, no off-putting notes. Nice fruity spice but shows its age very well. Amazing sherry influence but not overly sweet (this wouldn't be an everyday dram for sure) but is more on the desserty side of things. Would I drink it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically order it? - Yes Would I buy a bottle? - Yes
Richness berry, high pep, red wine, grape , creamy thick wood, complexity , 2.75 smoother than the high pep suggest , buttery red wine, richness of red vine yards, grapes, some acidic at the back of the palate, bitterness and lack any sort of sweetness. It’s like have a glass of wine with a hint of acidic note. The wine sherry notes feels like the glass of wine has been sitting around too long and gives this lingering after taste that doesn’t sit right 1 High sustain of oaky wine oak barrel 1 1.75
Nose - oh it's a dank warehouse, dark fruits...over ripe. This is old and yet the sherry dominates this, there's none of that oak bitterness coming through. Rich and fruity. Taste - rich, chocolate, butter, sherry, spicy oak. The finish is long, lingering, rich, complex. It isn't the most nuanced and detailed whisky to discuss. It's a sherry bomb and you can really tell this is using those european oak casks which gives it all kinds of spice flavors.
Nose: strong notes of sherry and oak. Some baking spice with a candied fruit sweetness. Palate: Strong sherry and toffee dominate the initial tasting. That sweet candied fruit continues but with a crispness of ripe apples. Finish: More toffee and that apple character expands with some orange peel as well! Wonderful expression from Glengoyne!
