The nose has hints of juniper with lavender floral undertones and a hint of peppery spice. The gin is not harshly juniper-forward on the palate which really lets some of the floral and spice notes shine through that are present. The finish is primarily bitter orange peel with floral and juniper notes hanging on. This gin sits in a unique position as a floral, American gin. In cocktails, this gin does not stand up to heavy amounts of citrus, but it pairs beautifully with herbal cocktails. With that said, I think the marketing behind this is better than the drink, and that makes the gin cost more than it should.
About this bottle
First released in 2006, American Aviation Gin was developed as a collaboration between Seattle bartender Ryan Magarian and Portland-based House Spirits Distillery. The gin begins with a neutral grain spirit, which is infused with seven botanicals—juniper, elettaria cardamom, lavender, sarsaparilla, coriander, anise seed, and dried sweet orange peel. These botanicals are steeped and heated in a stainless-steel vessel before the spirit is redistilled and bottled at 42% ABV. Note: Actor Ryan Reynolds acquired an ownership stake in the brand in February 2018.

An intense, gin by Lee Medoff, Christian Krogstad & mixologist Ryan Magarian for House Spirits in Portland, Oregon distilled from rye. It has a rich & spicy birth with notes of juniper, cardamom infused milk, hints of smoke, freshly cut grass, lavender, coriander, sweet orange, caraway, anise & pepper; while an oily life adds notes of rye, spice, floral lavender, anise, juniper & dried orange peel; that leads to a lightly sweet & clean finish with notes of citrus pith, peppery spice & lite smokiness. November 2018 / February 2019
Nice notes of a tea leaves and a strong juniper on the palate. I genuinely prefer this gin neat over mixed. When mixed, the more diffuse taste of this gin reveals a component that was more hidden when more concentrated: a kind of cough syrup flavor that I really dislike. When combined with some bitters, etc. it’s not a huge problem, but my biggest issue with this gin.
For a gin made to have less juniper notes, it certainly does a good job of exploring the other flavors. In a gin martini, the citrus notes (orange seems like a good way to describe it) are very forward, with light notes of juniper and lavender following it. Compared to Hendricks and Bombay Sapphire it’s certainly different, but it’s meant to be.
This tasted about as good as the friendliness of the bartender he even let me keep the empty bottle which one I got home realized was another half a shot. I definitely want to buy a fifth of this because I really didn't think I was going to like Gin but after this and Bombay it's got my attention as a sipper
Lots of floral and spice on the nose. I get a lot of orange peel with all the botanicals. Has a fair amount of botanicals for a contemporary gin, too. I usually want a London Dry, but this is one of the better contemporaries that I have had.
