Its diffficult after all this time to retrtace ones steps to visit a mega brand like this and give it a fair shake. Its also fair to assume that a product this ubiquitous and global is a far cry from where it began. I assume at one point Bacardi was a respected name in rum. Not just a mass produced mainstay, I mean RESPECTED. At one point this brand had to have had either great value, quality, marketing, or all three. This is probably the first silver rum most Americans are introduced to, most likely procured from a dusty patch-covered Jansport in a high school restroom and served in an opaque plastic cup filled with ice and some cola. Most likely its the first rum most americans overindulge on and repel into the gaping maw of the porcelain throne. Its become a staple of nearly every bar in the country simply because people ask for it, maybe out of loyalty to an amazing brand, but most likely because they dont have a list of availabke spirits and thus they take a shot in the dark, and call out a name that will most likely land them with a drink vs the "we dont carry that" alternative response. At this point I will not deep dive into when and where and how this product achieved such prominence to the point tht they can now remove any and all redeeming qualitites from the rum it once must have been and it still wouldnt touch their bottom line. Yet at some point this must have occurred. This is barely a rum. In fact if it werent for the flash of sugar that appears befre dissolving into the vapid neutral papery world normally occupied by vodka and nail polish remover, I would guess this is generic plastic bottle vodka. Its been distilled to the point all character is obliterated. This is rum for people who dont like rum. Rum for people who only drink "vodka crans". Rum for the guy who drinks rum once a year at his work christmas party. But this isnt rum for anyone who has any interest in rum. This isnt rum for anyone who has any interest in anything outside of getting the fastest possible ticket to drunk town at whatever cost necessary. So congrats on your success in the world of "product", Bacardi, but you must harbor the knowledge somewhere deep inside though you may never admit it. You must know it all centers around one word. Trash. That word not only descibes this product, it also serves as the name of the verb describing what action youve taken in relation to this brand... and its also the word which describes the state the unwashed masses who imbibe this find themselves in and its also the name for the medium in which which every bottle of this should be lying in were this a just world. Trash. Own it, for it is your legacy. Good day, sirs.
About this bottle
Bacardí Superior, "the original white rum," is made from a recipe based on the one created by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó at the original distillery in Santiago, Cuba in 1962. Rums are aged separately in ex-bourbon casks for one to two years. They are then blended and charcoal filtered for clarity.

I'm not sure why people despise this rum so much. It smells great, if a bit simple. Very sweet, almost like banana. Definitely not a harsh smell at all. Served neat it tastes like molasses and some vague fruit with just a small trace of ethanol towards the end. Super straightforward but where this drink really comes into its own is as a mixer. It doesn't function like a vodka whatsoever because it nicely complements most sweet flavors and juices. Seriously, add this to any juice and you have something that takes you immediately to a tropical spot. In a mojito it's just the right amount of sugar without making your drink boozy. An absolutely fun rum just begging to be mixed. Can't help but feel a lot of the hate this gets is because it's a big brand because honestly, for its price it's one of the most excellent mixers out there.
I despise Bacardí in favour of Havana Club. It's harder with top shelf bottles, but it's easy with basic selection. Overall quality score is so better for Havana and the price tag is almost the same. Havana miss the Dark rum and Oro/Gold one, but they are not essential. As I occasionally enjoy Havana 3 Aňos on rock, Bacardí is no go here. Bacardí basics are bit better than Morgan's, but you can get Morgan's with lower price tag. With white/blanca bottle, both the Bacardí and Morgan's can shake theirs hands here. they're both awful. The Morgan's is as usual cheaper, so we have winner between losers. But still, I will try to avoid both of them. Bacardí blanca is awful and you can't even make it into Molotov either because it only tastes like gasoline, but not burn like it...
sweet and bland Tastes more like a sweet vodka than a rum. Can be used to make relatively less complex drinks like mojitos with white sugar, it really does a good job there. I'm going to test this against wrey and nephew in the mojito department to see if the cheapness of this rum will still make it my party rum. For $20 a handle its insanely cheap, but you don't get much flavor for the price. In fact, if there was a price per flavor metric, this would probably end up being a bad deal.
Bacardi White is a bold white rum, ideal for crafting a rich and flavorful rum cake. On the nose, it presents notes of vanilla, citrus, and caramel, which linger into the finish with a blend of citrus and vanilla. The entry is smooth and oily, delivering a combination of vanilla and caramel, followed by a citrus-vanilla conclusion. Best enjoyed neat or used in cooking, Bacardi White is a culinary rum rather than a mixer, as its intense character can overpower a cocktail.
Very neutral nose, with faint accents of grapefruit, lime, and sugarcane. Mildly oily, round mouthfeel, with a little bit of heat. The same subdued notes from the nose reappear on the palate, with the addition of subtle nutmeg and vanilla which predominate on the short finish. It's not undrinkable – but don't expect it to be pleasant on its own or to stand out in any cocktail. 2.00/5.00 – Bad (neat)
