Nose: sweet malt, burnt sugar, ethanol Palate: surprised that up front was all thick malty richness with tons of simple syrup, but then transitioned to banana and yeasty esters from the beer barrel. Finish: surprisingly strong oak, brown sugar, simple syrup, and a gentle yeast finish Giving such a high score because it is really well done for what they wanted to accomplish. It’s not up my alley but glad I got to drink it.

About this bottle
Waco, Texas-based Balcones partnered with Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing Company for this limited edition whiskeys. To celebrate the brewery’s 25th anniversary, Saint Arnold released Grand Cru, a blend of three bourbon-barrel aged beers: Belgian-style quadrupel, Russian imperial stout, and English-style barleywine. Balcones then used those barrels to finish this whiskey released at 55% ABV.

Much sweeter than other balcones whiskies but very nice. Smooth and fruity on the tongue with a strong smell of caramel on the nose. Best with ice
