About this bottle

This is the 13th release in the Discovery Series which highlights the art of blending. Here the brand blended four different Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys together, each with a different mash bill. Two 9 year-olds make up the bulk of the blend (67%) followed by a 15 year-old (20%), and an 8 year-old (13%). Then the blend was split in two parcels for secondary aging — a first for this series — with 60% placed into new American white oak barrels and the remainder into Hungarian oak. After 4 months in these secondary barrels, the blend was married and bottled at 110.8 proof. Available nationwide in limited quantities beginning August 29, 2025 (SRP $139.99)

Nose: Oak(!), sugar, and caramel. Palate: (drank with a large ice cube) Lots of oak and spices. I'm not sure of the rye content in this one, but I do believe it's rye that is coming through like gang busters. However, as you continue to sip, this is one of those bourbons that achieves an ideal balance between "sweet" and "spicy". I'm often at a loss to articulate everything I'm tasting... but suffice to say, this is very good. It's a standout among the many, many bottles that are out there to log into your Whiskey ledgers. Finish: Long finish with spice and other slightly astringent qualities. Final Thoughts: I'm a big fan of the Bardstown brand. Up 'til now, I've only had their "Origins" Series offerings (before I ordered this, I finally tried their Wheated Bourbon)... and this "Discovery Double Barreled" proved the quintessential "try before you buy" — and I'm buying this as soon as I can find it!

A buddy of mine placed Bardstown on my radar a while back and I am so glad he did. I had a couple of the less complex intro types like the OG Bourbon and wheat. They were fine spirits for the price. But this was on another level. It drank like something you'd expect to break the bank over. The complexity and quality were fantastic. The nose had an inviting and interesting combination of brown sugar, baking spice, and herbal characters. The palate started off strongly with a childhood memory of what I deduced to be red hot candies. Spicy and sweet, but then slowly fading to notes of oak, tabacco, and subtle chocolate which lingered on its long finish. The body was oily which helped preserve the flavors. The only negative and sad fact is that my bottle is about to meet its end. After this experience, I will most certainly delve into the other offerings this skilled distillery has to offer.

Lots of tags here and there are more tags I’m still considering. So many flavors that this one crosses into its hard to say. Minty vs piney vs cinnamon vs peppery? Nose is deep dark and musty with some confectionery notes maybe vanilla frosting. Palate definitely had a tingle similar to red hots candy but has rich chocolate cupcake vibes. Starts rich and creme brulee changes to cinnamon then back to the burnt sugar thing. Its like a deep dark cousin to a willet purple top. It even tastes similar to one of the rare character bourbons of late. Its a top tier whiskey I really like now and will love when it gets colder. I wouldn’t say its one I would run out and buy more but I bet after its gone I’ll want another. Update. Just figured it out. Tastes like garrison brothers cowboy at almost half the price.

Nose reads very sweet, like cotton candy. There is also a light baking spice in the background. Wow, palate stays sweet, but I am brought back to Red Hot cinnamon candies. Just a hint of oakiness, which I had anticipated would be a lot more present given the second barreling. I am also picking up a hint of chocolate, which gets stronger towards the finish. Finish also presents some licorice and peanut. Nice heat, as well. Makes the finish hang on and on. A very nice pour.
