About this bottle

The Origin Series is the brand's first estate-distilled collection with 100% of production from distilling to bottling handled at Bardstown Bourbon Co. This Kentucky straight rye is one of three core releases in the series. It was made a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. After its initial maturation, it was then finished in custom barrels with alternating toasted American oak and toasted cherry wood staves for up to 6 months. Bottled at 96 proof, it's available as of December 2022 at select US retailers. (SRP $69.99)

Got this from a tasting box. Definitely excited to see what that cherry wood has to offer. The nose first this is carmel green apple in a field of grass. This takes me to the fair with licorice and cotton candy notes for me. First sip definitely a bit harsh at first but opens up and translates the nose nicely. The finish is long and satisfying as this feels like a fuller rye Second sip that grassy note leads the way to a carmel candy apple with that licorice and spice on the finish. Almost as if you dropped that candy apple in the field, picked it up and took a bite. I dont hate it. Added water and it took that harsh note from the front to the midpalate. Thinned it out but also balanced it out. I could see this nice on ice. I do love rye whiskey and for me this hits the spot. I think that cherry wood helps play toward those candy notes a rye can have. Overall I would drink this again.

Who watched last week’s Dallas game against GB? I didn’t. Cause I thought it would be a waste of time, assuming Dallas would win by a lot. And by a lot, I assumed at least 20 points. To the extent that I thought I’d be bored. In the words of a famous ex-President, current criminal indictment record holder , and possibly next president : “we’ll be winning so much, you’ll get bored”. Sadly, this sample was like that Dallas game. I just assumed that because it’s Bardstown, and because I really loved their Origins BiB bourbon, this will be just as good. Wrong assumption. They fumbled the ball at the 1 yd line on this one. Fresh minty nose. Typical rye. But at the palette it breaks down for me. A bit harsh, green apples, mint. Finish is doughy, caraway. It’s not bad….i just expected better

Aroma - Citrus, brown sugar, spearmint up front… As it opens I’m getting light notes of licorice and apples. Homemade rye bread (which was my personal favorite growing up)… man that rye bread really brings in some nostalgia for me. And it’s hard for me to not be amazed by this aroma. Taste - Citrus and Mint up front. Sweet cherries and bubblegum mid palate and very very light oak note on the finish. Finding a black licorice note here that at the back of the palate and continues with the finish. Not overly complex but balance and flavor profile are spot on. Finish is medium. Overall - This is sweet for a rye and it’s very well balanced for a 95/5. Very unique and absolutely worth the price of admission. (No dill or pepper presence on this one either) 4.30

Nose is oak, lemon. Vinegar. Pear. Bit of pickle. Perfume. Body is brine. Salt. The pear kicks back in. Floral notes as well. Finish is cream. Baking spices. Pear carries though. Baking powder. This is a harsh rye. Not one of my favorites in the rye category, not one of my favorites in the origins lineup. It’s fine, but unlike the bourbons, I think this is not good enough to be worth the $60 price tag.

Nose: starts off with beautiful notes of citrus like a mix of orange and lemon peels, with just a slight hint of floral and herbal notes below the surface. Palate: citrus continues on the front of the palate, followed by some oily licorice, honey, and pepper notes. Finish: lovely medium to long finish that does not overpower.

Sweet caramel and cherry coke nose with a touch of smoke and leather. I get prunes as well. Sweetness follows on the palate, anise, cinnamon, and cocoa. As the flavor lingers, I am reminded of Good-n-plenty candy. Classic rye flavors with a punch of sweetness.
