Quite smooth, but with a fairly hefty dose of char. We had hoped for more effort from the apple brandy cask, but the fruit comes through fairly late in the tasting. Still, overall, it has a very approachable entry. We’d be curious to see how a longer aged approach would work. Somewhat light in body, the char is secondary to the sweetness of the corn. We enjoy this in whiskey highballs and as a chaser with a lager ale.
About this bottle
Americana is the fifth whiskey to be added to Broken Barrel's core lineup. It's a straight American whiskey made with a blend of 4+ year-old corn whiskey and younger straight bourbon. After these barrels were selected, they were dumped and batched into a large tank. Then a selection of staves were added to the tank as a finishing process. The staves used here were charred American oak (40%), toasted American oak (40%), and American apple brandy casks (20%). Bottled at 100 proof, Americana begins its rollout nationally in November 2022. (SRP $35)

Fruited staves nose. Light, easy drinker but buttery. Fruit forward and vanilla oak. Not complicated but enjoyable.
