I received a set of samples for the three whiskeys in the Kosher line. This one is 7 years old and going to be the same mashbill, and very similar age and proof as Weller Special Reserve, so I’ll be comparing it to that as a reference. The nose has red apples, raisins, hint of raspberry, honey, leather, dusty oak, and a little bit of sweet corn. The palate is sweet, creamy and a little oily with red apple, baking spices, chocolate, light leather, caramel, and oak. The finish is long and has a quick pop of raspberry that goes into nice baking spices that linger along with red apple, slight bitterness and a subtle hint of leather. So far the Kosher line does not disappoint! (I’ve had this and the Straight Rye so far). Weller Special Reserve by comparison came across a little more flat with a slight alcohol spikiness all around and a much shorter finish, though it did have a thicker mouthfeel. Just for fun I also compared it to Weller 12 year old, and the Kosher still stood out as a more complex and enjoyable bourbon. Though, I will admit I’m one of the few who like Weller Special Reserve more than Weller 12 year (W12 is more bitter from the oak and has a very pronounced sort of chemical artificial green apple note I’m not a fan of). Basically if you like any of the lower proofed Weller products, go get this. I would say it’s closer to proofed down Weller Antique 107, profile wise. After trying it, I’m going to start referring to this as Kosher Weller.
Buffalo Trace Kosher Wheat Recipe Straight Bourbon (2020 Release)
About this bottle
Buffalo Trace Kosher Wheat Recipe is one of three Kosher whiskey releases from Buffalo Trace Distillery, a limited edition annual release expected to hit shelves after Passover ends in 2020. The certified Kosher whiskey was made with the guidance of the Chicago Rabbinical Council. In 2012, new American oak Kosher barrels were sold to a non-Jewish Buffalo Trace executive which were filled with a wheat recipe bourbon mash bill. In 2020, the bottling lines were flushed to ensure non-Kosher spirit would not be in contact with the matured bourbon. This allocated release will be sold before Passover 2021 begins with a new release to follow after the Jewish holiday.

The Kosher Rye was surpisngly good. And Weller is always a classic. So the BT Kosher Wheat Recipe is promising. Let's check it out. Nose: Cherry and vanilla. Gala apple and cocoa. Brown sugar. Marshmallow and toffee. Orange peel. Clove and nutmeg. Ginger. Oak. Palate: Apple/apple cider and black cherry. There's a grape note. Chewy caramel. Brown sugar and vanilla. Dried apricot and orange peel. Oak. Finish: The cherry, apple, and dried apricot persist from the palate. Brown sugar as well. The finish is then overtaken by cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, clove, and oak. Moderate length. 4.25. Same score as the rye. It's solid stuff. Definitely comes from the same heritage as the Weller line. Better than the Special Reserve, and cheaper too. At $40, this was well worth the price of entry. So far so good with this Kosher line. On to the Rye Recipe bourbon to complete the hat trick.
nose : grainy, salted roast nuts , butter , spices , very satisfying . Palate : thicker , fuller , dark chocolate , nuts , sweeter , good amount of heat ,medium to long finish and heat lingers for a while at back palate . Overall : far better than weller special reserve and as good as weller 12 specially extra 4 proof does magic . It sits way above weller special reserve and even better than weller 12 for me ( again extra 4 proof makes great difference ). Wheated bourbon lovers should seek out for this bottle. I’m gonna get 1 or 2 more bottles for reserve .
Good stuff. A friend gave me a pour of the wheat and rye to compare. Bright, flavorful, and a tad complex. There's the Weller/BT/Colonel stock there, which is my favorite mash line. This seems to have more wood spice though and less vanilla and honey. It's peachy, cinnamon, and clove. It's also less fruity than others in the line, which is fine with me. Cocoa powder and citrus on the finish. Overall, I like this more than the rye.
Poured neat. Sweat and creamy nose, like cake batter, along with a dusty grain. Sweet bread pudding on the front of the tongue. Mid palate brings out smokey floral notes and finishes like a sweet herbal tea Very happy with this pour. Similar to the standard BT but with a touch more sweetness.
Nose - grains and cherry, lots of vanilla and alcohol. Taste is very much wheat forward. Some spices, but not hot. Nothing overly complex. Light finish, pretty quick..overall, very solid. Only picked it up because it’s new. Not disappointed but not wowed either
