Nose: Sweet raisin-infused sherry, stewed tropical fruits, oak wood. There is an alcohol nip on the neat nose which was unexpected for a whisky of this age and strength. Water changes the character of the nose but does not harm it at all - in fact it makes the nose seem more like that of an older whisky. Palate: Sweet malt and fortified wine arrival. A little hot spice (ginger, chilli) which intensifies in the development. Good oily texture. Water modulates the spicy notes, giving them better texture and integration resulting in a moderate cinnamon-ginger flavour. Dilution also highlights the malty cereal facets. Finish: Medium. Sweet and spicy malt. With water there is honey and treacle in the aftertaste. Although it is a little one-dimensional I enjoyed the nose on this immediately. It has that lovely classic sherry-finished Bunnahabhain character in spades and nosing it reminded me of walking through Warehouse 9 at the distillery. The palate is good but did not impress me as much at first and I could not wait to add water as I was certain it would work miracles. It did help and I’d definitely recommend reduction for this dram, but as for miracles … meh, maybe not.
