Nose: Full-bodied sherry and old oak aromas when neat, with leather armchair, orange jam and a little brine. Adding water produces lighter citrus notes (lemon, orange) but almost obliterates the leathery malt and maritime facets. This is a whisky that noses better when neat. There is a whiff of smoke or ash on the dry glass. Palate: Hefty malt, white pepper and oak on the neat arrival. More complex spice notes (clove, cinnamon, allspice and tamarind) in the development. Reduction sweetens the profile but also combines and intensifies all the spice notes. Whether this is desirable or not is up to personal taste. Finish: Medium/Long. Spicy, hot malt and citrus. Tannins in the aftertaste. This whisky has a very fine nose but for me the palate was overly spicy. It is highly cask driven with abundant malt and cereal notes, but there is little fruity or floral quality and in my opinion there is a lack of balance. I had difficulty finding a good point of dilution with the whisky, as the nose was too diffuse by the time the palate had come together. It’s a very good dram but not one for beginners, and probably only a recommendation for Bunnahabhain aficionados. It also benefits a great deal from time in the glass, so be patient with it. Tasted from a sample purchased at Bunnahabhain Distillery, April 16th 2025 “Very Good” : 85/100 (4 stars)
