Review #27 - Whisk(e)y #18 Colour - Amber-Deep Gold, with rather short legs in the glass. Nose - light, grainy, spicy, honey and vanilla, with an underlying sweetness and some alcohol, slightly oily taste, perhaps with a light herbal note, light fresh fruit and an effervescence on the tip of the tongue. After it takes a bit of air it becomes more approachable and less spicy, which is rather pleasant. Taste - Very spicy, and that is with a very sharp spice, oily on the front end, but then it suddenly feels slightly more watery, with honey, vanilla, and oaky woodiness. The aftertaste has some more woodiness and extremely subtle bitterness, which can easily go unnoticed. It tastes like a young whisky. It does not hold a few drops of water very well, as the mouthfeel becomes very watery, the sweetness is diminished, and the sharp spice is brought forth, while the woody dryness on the finish is also diminished. Finish - Rather short, dry, oaky woody, perhaps with some fresh fruit. Overall, from what I recall, compared to Jameson and Tullamore DEW, it is not as sweet, perhaps a bit drier and with more sharp spice. N: Orchard fruit, black licorice, and a hit of ethanol. Cereal grain and green herbs. Not a very dynamic nose - short and sweet. P: Sweet caramel and fruity kid's cereal (but like a generic one). Vanilla with a mild smoky note that feels like barrel char. Finish definitely has a young grain alcohol burn to it, but it's not terribly overwhelming. Also has a bit of mint and just the faintest hints of the orchard fruit from the nose. Black licorice builds into the finish over time. As a cheap Irish blend, this is fine. It's less sippable than Tulamore DEW, for example, but it's probably a little more approachable and interesting than a Proper Twelve. The bourbon barrels make their presence known more here than most Irish I've tried and some might find that appealing. I still think most people would prefer Jameson over this, and especially some of the different finishes of Jameson (the Black Barrel is head and shoulders better than this). _______ Please come join a bunch of regular Distiller reviewers are chatting spirits in real time on Discord: https://discord.gg/4nfePCdyKM. A 375ml bottle cost me $14.99 at Total Wine here in Albuquerque. It's 80 proof, and it's aged for three years. It's a corn color in the glass. NOSE: Flowers, honey, a slightly sour note, alcohol, pears. After a couple of sips I picked up an additional note - something sharp which I think might be the malt, since I've encountered this note before in Balcones Texas Lineage Single Malt Whisky. MOUTHFEEL: Watery. TASTE: Honey and pears, very faint oak. FINISH: Medium - oak, honey, and an alcohol sting. This isn't a bad whisky, but I suspect it's at most on the middle shelf of Irish whiskies. I'm just beginning to experiment with Irish whiskey, and this is just my second, but I already have a ranking - Jameson is better. This is just much more simple than I like. I will, however, possibly buy it again, and I'll certainly try other Bushmills expressions.
Visual: Honey-gold; thin legs. Nosing: tons of tinned/jarred sweet pear. Fresh oak shavings and honey biscuits. Young, fruity, and floral. Tasting: definitely young with lots of warming alcohol. Medium body; quick finish. Slightly spicy with lots of oak. Decently sweet. Reduced Nosing: cereal and more fruitiness come through. Reduced Tasting: with water added, much more honey and sweetness comes through. Fresh cracked pale malt is also evident. For a generally cheap blend, this dram is quite enjoyable; nothing to write home about, but definitely something that tastes good and can be enjoyed causally!
