Review #46 - Whisk(e)y #30 I have bought this 1L bottle for 31 euros (the shipping was an extra 6 euros), which seems like a steal given the fact that the usual price ranges from 50 to even 90 euros or more. Golden-amber colour with long legs and viscous texture in the glass. Nose - spice, fresh fruit (apples), some dried fruit (albeit not as pronounced as I expected), oak, caramel, sweetness. Palate - Quite sherry spice forward (cinnamon, but also oak), not sharp though, but rather warming, with a faint green, herbal note. It fades rather quickly and leaves behind the underlying notes, being sweet, malty and quite creamy surprisingly, milk chocolate, honey, caramely, with plums, figs and dates as well. Finish - medium, dry, oaky...the dryness intensifies towards the finish, and at the very end there is a slight bitter note, still pleasant, which adds dimension. On the after-taste it develops a very prominent raisin note, with underlying figs, which is rather enjoyable. Overall the whisky develops very nicely in 5 steps. On the back-end it feels like an intensified maltier version of the Dewar's 12...might sound weird comparing these whiskies from very different categories, but still. My expectations were rather low from this, as I have seen people say it is overly spicy, thin, bitter...but everything develops so nicely and is so well integrated. Upon further tasting the raisin notes are soo pronounced on the palate, really surprising. I really do enjoy it, and at the price I got it for, it is outstanding value. Bushmills Steamship Collection Sherry Cask Reserve
About this bottle
Part of an ongoing expansion of the brand by its new owner, Jose Cuervo, the Steamship Collection is a Travel Retail Exclusive from Bushmills. The series is named for a steamship built in 1890, the SS Bushmills, that called Ireland home, but traveled the globe as far as the Americas and Asia. Allegedly, it brought back casks of rum, fortified wine, and bourbon from the new world. The Sherry Cask Reserve is the first release of three bottlings, which will presumably mirror the three casks borne back to Ireland by the steamer. Matured in ex-oloroso sherry butts, the single malt is tripled distilled, as per Bushmills house style. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 40% ABV.

Here in Denver for business (unfortunately not skiing), and I noticed this sitting at the hotel bar. Unopened, a bit dusty, and nestled between a JB and Redbreast. Triple distilled Irish matured in sherry cask? That’s not common, is it? Either way, a worthwhile pour. Light, sweet, but not too sweet. With a nice hefty backbone of raisins and dark fruits. Would I buy a full bottle? Probably not, but interesting to try if you ever see it at a bar.
Thought I'd have a lazy Sat arvo with a bit of Whittakers dark chocolate (fijian ginger and NZ mandarin) and thought why not pair it with a whiskey. This one was a great match. Sweet green spiced oak, burnt toffee and a whole bunch more going on. It's abv belies a nice spicey punch which lingers long after the last drop is gone. At $75 fair to great value. Out of several drams tried today definitely the top.
★★★★★ A first steamship I start a tasting of the 3 steamships of Bushmills before going on our tour. Oh, that's good! I'm starting to think about bringing back more bottles than the law requires. However, I will change my mind when I'll see the price. It is fruity, spicy, chocolate and legendary sweet. Totally within my taste.
This is tasty and easy to drink, but flavors are all over the map, leaving nothing to really stand out. Has smokiness, and a sweet sherry finish, and something makes me think of honey. Smooth, almost silky, but a somewhat plain landscape.
Mild nose, smokey start (after it opens up) and a sweet sherry finish. Good tasting balanced irish whiskey, but I feel like it's a bit lacking in flavor.
