About this bottle

One of the oldest houses of armagnac, the Château de Briat was built in 1540 about two centuries after armagnac production first began in the 14th century. This Hors d'Âge expression is bottled after 12 years of maturation in French oak. Armagnac is usually matured for the first two to three years in new, toasted oak before being moved to older cask so that the oak flavors do not overpower the spirit. The Château does not top off its barrels, allowing the distillate air contact as it matures. The grapes are 75% Baco Blanc (a phylloxera-resistant hybrid of the French varietal Folle Blanche and the American Noah grape), 15% Folle Blanche, and 10% Colombard. Bottled at 44% ABV.

Nose - butterscotch, peanut, burnt caramel, brown sugar, toffee, coffee, vanilla, black cherry, raisin, plum, dark chocolate, marked barrel spice, high ethanol burn. Taste - sweet peanut, butterscotch, brown sugar, burnt caramel, vanilla, raisin, cherry, chocolate, tannic oak notes, high alcohol bite, finishing fairly long with notes of dark fruit, burnt sugar, and bitter, tannic oak. The nose is great. The taste is good. The main detractor is that it drinks very young and hot, which is surprising given the 12 year age statement. This is my first Armagnac; I’m looking forward to trying more of them.

Nutty nose like peanut, palette is dry plums and vanilla and the finish is drying and oak driven. My first entrance into armangnacs and I love it.
