About this bottle

Legend has it that the head of the Mackenzie clan saved King Alexander III, King of Scots, from a stag during a hunting expedition. The Mackenzie clan eventually came to own The Dalmore Distillery for almost a century and The Stag symbol is proudly displayed on their bottles. This bottling is aged in SIX different casks: bourbon, sherry, Marsala, Madeira, port, and cabernet sauvignon.

I have long awaited to taste this legendary whisky. Is it good? It is wonderful. Is it what i expected to be... maybe not. Lets start saying why is it so mystical. It has been matured in six different casks, six wood finishes: matusalem oloroso, port pipes, marsala, madeira, cabernet sauvignon, american white oak. Bottled at 40% abv, with a lovely mahogany color. On the nose it is outstanding. Just plain beautiful. Berries. Jam. Nutmeg. Wedding cake. Dark cake. There is a citric note there. Red fruits. Cold red fruits (winter berries). It is exactly as a cold pressed antioxidant juice that is sold here in Ecuador called "D'hoy frutos rojos". On the palate is where i expected more. I really hoped it will blow my mind away but was a little straightforward, somehow mimic the nose losing some of the complexity it had there. Still a great and interesting dram. It has that Dalmore typical wood flavor. There is a sweet but woody flavor. Peppermint. Reminded me a lot as glenfiddich 21yo winter storm, specially on the nose. I believe it is a little straightforward and not that complex. The aftertaste is eternal. Full ginger spiciness there. Incredible. My actual score for it was 95 over 100, due to this: Nose 25/25 Palate 22/25 Finish 25/25 Balance 23/25. Maybe i am too "picky" over this one because i had high hopes on it. It is a wonderful dram, i believe it is worthy for the $150-170 that it costs, and you should definitively try it, for me, cigar malt is slightly better. It doesn't feel as an old dram, i don't believe the six wood finishes fully get there, but as i said before, it is a wonderful whisky. Slainte!

After a long search for this whisky, I finally managed to obtain a sample. Normally I would have no interest in this malt: no age statement, only 40% ABV, coloured and chill filtered. But the unique profile of this whisky (6 different casks) makes even the most sceptical person curious... Nose - The nose contains a very wide range of scents that I have never experienced in one dram before. It has notes of garlic butter, grass, ginger, sherry, hay, compost (sounds worse than it is), leather, tabacco, honey, red fruits, toffee, caramel, tiramisu, espresso and vanilla ice cream. Palate - Sweet. Very sweet. Very sugary, syrupy and mouthcoating. It is similar to a sweet coffee liqueur, but as a whisky. I'm a fan, but it is definitely not for everyone. Finish - The sweetness of the palate carries over to the finish, where notes of white chocolate, malt, sherry, banana and coconut are very present. It has a bit of funk that I am not used to. I love it. It is a real dessert whisky that I want to add to my collection sooner or later. The price is unfortunately quite steep, but you pay for the uniqueness of this whisky and for a wide range of (hopefully) quality casks. "Excellent" : 4 stars | Really quite exceptional.

Thin and sweet on the nose. Not a pleasant aroma. First sip: I can’t shake the impression of chlorine. It literally tastes like I am sitting in an over-chlorinated hot tub. It’s thin too. Like so thin it’s almost refreshing. Sip 2: ok, this is a truly odd drink. So easy drinking it doesn’t even come across as whisky. I can’t decide if it’s remarkably drinkable or remarkably weird. So thin, yet so smooth and drinkable. I noticed more lemon flavor and citrus this time. I had my wife taste it and in her words, “I love it. Really, really light, and feels good inside”. Third sip: I’m still conflicted. It’s not my favorite, scotch, but was still compelled to drink to the last drop. I could think of more than one friend ld like to serve this to.

Rich, dark fruity bouquet with a hint of date nut bread and a touch of rose. Entry on the palate is sweet and herbaceous, then follows intense spice. Afterwards stewed fruits, jammy plums, Medjool dates in syrup, ginger, cassia cinnamon, a hearty dash of cayenne pepper, deeply charred bourbon barrel, and grape musk become apparent. The body is velvety and sumptuous, with decent legs despite the low ABV. The finish is long and reminiscent of fortified wines aged in wood. There’s a bit of mint, possibly oregano, lingering caramelized fruit sweetness, but also some sourness like balsamic glaze, chocolate hazelnut spread, just a touch of bitter orange, and finally charred oak that lingers for a spell. Nose: 8 Taste: 9 Body: 8 Finish: 9

At some point in my whisky journey I’ve had a pour or two of Dalmore but am quite confident that I’ve never owned a bottle. Thanks to the massive generosity of @PBMichiganWolverine I was able to try a sample of this Dalmore offering. There’s no doubt this is a delicious and drinkable whisky but the 40% abv leaves it a bit thin and can’t recall any real stand-out tasting notes. A quick scope online reveals an eye-popping price tag in the $240 range. If this bottle was $70, I’d still choose Kilkerran 12 or Ardbeg Uigeadail or Springbank 10 over this any day of the week. Cheers again PB for sending over a taste I probably would never have tried otherwise.

I am a fan of what Richard Patterson @ The Damore does with finishes...Quite a bit going on with this dram possibly muting it?? Due to retail cost i would say does not live up to price paid. Their website reads: Six different cask finishes are exquisitely curated to create a one of a kind whisky with a rich and enticing flavour profile. DALMORE KING ALEXANDER III is finished in Kentucky bourbon casks , Jerez Oloroso, Sicilian Marsala, Douro valley port , Cabernet sauvignon Sounds wonderful Nose, palate & finish are smooth but lacks my flavor profile. Not memorable
