About this bottle

Under the watch of sixth-generation Master Distiller Roberto Serralles, Don Q Añejo is distilled five times in a continuous still, then aged from three to ten years in used American white oak barrels. According to Don Q, up to 10% of the aged rum is lost to evaporation - the “Angel’s Share” - compared to an average of 2% in Scotland.

Rating: 11/23 N: On the lighter side. Sweet, but not syrupy. There's a mild mustiness here and a dryness that's somewhere between paper and unsweetened dried tropical fruit (perhaps a little underripe?). Gradually, some sugary tropical fruit notes start to pop. P: Quite balanced and less sweet than I'd thought it might be. Not terribly woody, but sweet with a variety of predominantly tropical fruit flavors (pineapple, mango, bitter curaçao orange, apple (without peel). There's a kind of dryness to the spirit with a faint mustiness and some burnt sugar. There are some edges that are a little sharp with that burnt sugar bite that starts taking over and it's a bit light. The balance is otherwise fine. This palate is far from the fullness and complexity of Appleton Estate 12 and it's lacking that nice barrel flavor with sweet elements like vanilla in it. The balance is also not as effective here and it's somewhat harsher. F: Mostly dry and not very fruity. A bit more of the bitterness remains than of the sweetness. - Conclusion - Appleton Estate 12 and Plantation Xaymaca absolutely crush this. It's much more in the vicinity of Plantation 3 Star as a neat pour. Now, Plantation 3 Star is a nice light rum, but it's not something I'd ever call a sipper. This is a bit more of a sipper than that is though, I think. Considering that, I'm looking at an 11 to 12 here. I came really really close to giving this a 12, but it's just a tad too rough for that, so it's getting an 11. Thanks to @ctbeck11 for the sample :)

Nose - light molasses, honey, caramel, apple, vanilla cream, banana, nutmeg, clove, oat, floral notes, white pepper, mild to moderate ethanol burn. Taste - sour apple, light molasses, ginger, banana, black pepper, butterscotch, vanilla, grape, floral notes, lemon, clove, peppermint, grass, bitter herbal notes, moderate alcohol bite, finishing medium short with molasses, baking spice, and sour apple flavors. The nose is rather light and spice forward. Caramel, molasses, and banana are present along with some honeyed, spiced apples. The palate sadly drifts into youthful sour territory. Many of the aromas translate to flavors, but with some added citrus, herbal, and minty notes included. The finish is sour and baking spicy, but generally mediocre. Another completely average rum, suitable only for mixing in my opinion. It’s too youthful, light, and sour to be a serviceable sipper. Overall, it’s certainly not the worst rum I’ve tasted, but I don’t see a place for it on my shelf, except as a component in a one-off cocktail I may make in the future.

Nose is pungent, alcoholic and funky. On the tongue, there’s vanilla, banana, funk and spiciness. It’s not a sweet rum nor a medicinal one. The finish is quick with some apples. Not an everyday sipper and probably best served as a traditional mixer.

Had in Quinnsanity Shake; Don Q Anejo rum, Marie Brizard, apricot liqueur, cheesecake, graham cracker crumbles. Had a sweet oak cheesecake flavor. Had @ Alamo Drafthouse Lake Highland, Dallas while watching Birds of Pray.

Smooth notes. Surprised me actually. Bitter on the front end but it doesn't linger. Smooth on the back end. Notes of a slight vanilla after taste. Cannot figure it out yet but it coats the palate with "pleasantness."

Good everyday aged rum for mixing. Use in a Cuba Libre.
