Barrel #022 The nose came out of left field for me. Much darker notes than expected at first. Dark caramel. A prevalent oak note. Slight tobacco. Dark berry. Apple. There was an herbal note, which i was surprised by. Vanilla/cherry becomes noticeable as it opens up. The palate sweetened up some with berry coming through. The dark caramel is still staying prevalent along with oak underneath. It ends with a real sweet cherry, which has reminded me of some finished bourbons I've had in the past. I do love a high proof bourbon. But these ER's remind me again and again that you can find so much flavor in a bottle below 100 proof. This one, in particular, has some complexity behind it. I'm a fan of Eagle Rare, but the initial smell made me worried. But I've found it has everything I like about it, plus more.
About this bottle
Buffalo Trace's Eagle Rare Bourbon offers up some single barrels for retailers to purchase as exclusive selections rather than the standard batch bottlings. The bourbon is aged for 10 years like the flagship bottling and it's bottled at 90 proof. Look for the seller to list its own name on the bottle. As is the nature of single barrel selections expect flavor variations between each single barrel pick.

I picked up the Brown Jug 2020 Single Barrel Select on sale at my local store. I’ve always really enjoyed Eagle Rare, and figure this would fit perfectly. The flavor certainly provided a stronger, richer hit on the tongue with similar wood, maple, and bacon notes as the original. However it almost felt a little too powerful and took away significantly from the smoothness of the original. I likened it to a bottled-in-bond version of the original, but without the extra alcohol. Strong, rich flavors, but takes away from the smooth drinking.
Worldwide Wine & Spirits store pick Barrel#648 Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Caramel and vanilla with a floral note. Palate: Clove and baking spice with some oak tannins. Finish: Medium length with medium heat. Splash: No new flavors are revealed. Overall: 8/10 - This seems like the typical ER10 profile, with less cinnamon on the palate. A decent sipper for $50, which is the going price for a non-store pick around me.
