About this bottle

In an effort to highlight the ten bourbon recipes made at Four Roses — each featuring a combination of mash bill and a proprietary yeast strain — the brand is launching the Single Barrel Collection alongside the flagship Single Barrel which is offered with the OBSV recipe. This OESO recipe features 20% rye in the mash bill and the O yeast strain which provides rich red fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, and delicate oak. Each bottle is aged 7-9 years and is bottled at 100 proof. This is one of three recipes that will launch in early 2025 with a new set to be launched in rotation each year. (SRP $49.99)

Aroma offers elote’, oak, cinnamon sugar, light vanilla, berry, and wintergreen. Ethanol is a pinch higher than I’d like for the proof, but still low overall. Palate is sweeter than the nose would indicate as some traditional vanilla/caramel notes come to the forefront. Also nutmeg, allspice, buttered corn, and the tiniest hint of an herbal note which is hard to identify but at gunpoint I’d say sage. Flavors are pretty simplistic, lacking punch and depth. Finish is on the short side with heavy oak tannins, white pepper, cinnamon, and clove. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of medium-bodied, with a nice slickness that keeps it from becoming harsh or abrasive. A decent bourbon but nothing to write home about as most of the flavors are pretty ubiquitous. That said, at $49.99 that I paid it is in no way a rip off, it’s just that there’s better out there for the price. Just one of the many “pretty good” bottles that I can’t really see myself rebuying.

An elegant, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey by Master Distiller Brent Elliott in Kentucky crafted with a mash bill of 75% Corn, 20% Rye & 5% Malted Barley using yeast O. It has an aromatic birth with notes of grains, wood, fruits, nuts, herbs & spices; while a delicate life adds hints of strawberry, cherry, fig, vanilla cupcake & brownie batter; that led to a balanced death of medium length with hints of orange zest, oak, nougat, chocolate mousse cake, toasted walnuts, wet tobacco, tea leaf & mint. Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Caramel, apple, butterscotch. Palate: Cinnamon, baking spice, some oak tannins. Finish: Warm and surprisingly long for 100 proof. Splash: A vegetal and almost salty note appears. Overall: 9/10 - Having tried this recipe at full strength, this 100 proof version is almost as good. My favorite Four Roses single barrel recipe. Easy to find and not expensive for what it is.

Nose: Creamy cherry vanilla Palate: Red fruit, vanilla, hint of oak Finish: Medium I was hunting for a single-barrel version of OESO ever since it was announced as part of the inaugural batch of new Four Roses Single Barrel releases. On paper, the OESO profile sounded like something up my alley- and it is! A great combination of fruist and vanilla with a solid body and surpringly solid finish.

Nose: not a whole lot on the nose but i do get a weird makers mark eraser funk, light caramel, butterscotch, jalapeno Palate: Palate is much better. You get this sweet, red fruit with a hot tamale mouth watering kick. Savory and well balanced with fruit and spice. Little weak finish with some mellow tones which brings it down

I prefer the “standard” bourbon taste notes, oak, vanilla, and caramel. For a rye this is a great pour. Soft not a spicy herbal rye. Favorite of the new series
