hardfarter 4.3

This is a high rating, I know. This isn't a crazy complicated, high proof, and finished rye that'll do a tango in your mouth. But considering it's $23 and EVERYWHERE, for 90 proof it's honestly excellent. Seriously. Find me another Rye Whiskey in this range of criteria that is anywhere as good as this. In the proof range, I prefer Redwood Empire Emerald Giant, but it's for all intents and purposes, 2x the price. In the price range, it's got more character than the Elijah Craig Rye and the Jack Daniel's Rye IMO. Maybe the Ezra Brooks 99 Rye beats it. I think I'll do that blind tonight. But it's also 10 proof higher. Seriously, I think it's very good given the limitations on it price/proof wise. Is it gonna change your world? Probably not. Is it worth a buy? I say absolutely.

WhatsInTheBox 3.5

Nose: Lighter than you'd expect for such a high rye content. Toasted marshmallow, vanilla, barrel char, dill, mint, and a bit of peach make an enjoyable introduction. Palate: Marshmallow sweetness, cracked white pepper, more mint and dill with clove and a nice oakiness. Finish: Fairly short, but had a nice complexity of toasted marshmallow, pepper, mint, and dried peaches. Summary: This bottle proves that chill filtering doesn't mean a whiskey is automatically worse. All it does is change the profile. The MGP 95/5 Rye is typically very punchy and spicy. The filtering tones that down to reveal some nuance you wouldn't get without the filtering. Great daily Rye. Great price. Pick one up.

Color: Gold / Amber Nose: Vanilla | Slighty Floral | Herbal Mild for rye especially after recently reviewing the Willet 4 year rye. Very pleasant nose but subdued. Palate: Light mouthfeel. Like the nose, the palate seems somewhat subdued. The typical rye spice is present but not overwhelming. Still hints of vanilla but you have to really search for it. Finish: Short finish. Almost zero heat. Incredibly easy to drink without being blasted by spice. Not much stands out here otherwise.

Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Stone fruit and herbs, some minty notes. Palate: More herbs and mint, without the fruity notes from the nose. Finish: Medium length with very little heat. Splash: The minty notes really shine. Overall: 8/10 - I'm not a big rye drinker, but this was a pleasant departure from bourbon. It's MGP 95/5, but the minty notes are really pleasant without being too forward. For a budget rye, this was impressive.

I like MGP rye, full stop. This expression is, as expected, really similar to Bulleit and Ezra Brooks being essentially the same liquid but aged a bit longer. This has a wonderfully fruity, easy to approach flavor profile that emphasizes the sweet over the spice. Quite nice across the boards although maybe lacking the level of complexity and impact of the very best of the style. For the price this is a very good rye although it could benefit from a higher proof.

Great! Not a typical high spice rye. Aged for 5 years. I don't think you'll find other eye aged this long for this price Nice balance of spices, sweetness and herbal flavors. The chil filter with sugar maple charcoal makes this completely different from others. Sip neat, great. Add a ice cube, slight change in flavor, great. Add a little water, great. Try this one!
