About this bottle

Green River Bourbon was distilled using a mash bill of Kentucky-grown corn, winter rye, and malted barley (two and six row). It was aged for over 5 years and bottled at 90 proof. Green River Distilling Co. was founded in 1885, but after a fire in 1918 followed by Prohibition the distillery closed. This bottling marks the first whiskey from the brand in over 100 years. Availability begins at the distillery and in Kentucky in February 2022 with a roll out to other markets in the following months. Note: In July 2022, Bardstown Bourbon Company purchased Green River Distilling Co. (SRP $34.99)

Color: Light-Medium Copper Nose: Relatively light nose of oak with a mild alcohol whiff, and a hint of cherry. Nice nose, all in all. Palate: (Drank neat, taking the low proof into consideration) My first impression is this is somewhat youthful, but not as off-putting as other young-tasting drams I've sipped in the past. As a matter of fact, I'm getting some licorice on these initial sips. You'd not expect much of a burn at this proof... but this stuff gives you quite a warm hug! Slightly sweet on the tongue with a light mouth feel. There's also some "fruitiness" that I'm getting, once an ice cube was introduceed in subsequent pours, and it begins to dillute. The licorice I mentioned before slowly transforms into menthol the more I sip. Interesting juxtaposition between the warm hug and the "cooling" menthol flavor. Spicy on the back end. Finish: Medium with spicy menthol. Might sound strange, but the finish is the highlight on this one for me. Final Thoughts: Hmmmm.I generally frown upon youthful tasting bourbon, but this one has an interesting enough profile to keep it from receiving a negative review and low rating from me. I've heard that it's aged "at least 4 years", but I can't be sure. In the $30 range, I'd say this is "good". 3.0 stars.

Aroma-caramel and old wet oak are really bold here up front. Getting quite a bit of lemon cake with vanilla frosting… and some leather presence as well coming through. As it opens up I’m getting some red apple notes and even a slight touch of cracked black pepper. I must say. For a <$40 bottle, the nose is quite nice and complex. The oak presence is very nice and reminds me a much older aged bourbon. Really hope the palate follows the nose on this. Taste - light fruit and caramel.. touch of vanilla. Still getting a light hint of that sweet cake and frosting. The finish is very short and has a slightly drying aspect on the back end. This is coming in quite hot too. Little rough around the edges to be honest. Overall - the nose is far superior than the palate. The nose comes off complex and much older.. the palate is youthful, flat and the finish is quite drying. It drinks a hotter than its proof too. For under $40 price, it’s average. Decent bottle to leave out for parties (I ended up putting this into a decanter). Probably something I will end up making an old fashion with. Doubt I grab another bottle.

I bought this a while back and tried it off and on for the last few months. I paid between $30 and 35 so that is usually where I shop. It has a lot going for it and I like that. It has a rugged almost unrefined taste but that is because it wants to taste like that. On the nose, I get ethanol and vanilla but if you wait a little you can get some spice as well. The front is a bit rough but it is not unpleasant and I get vanilla, spice, and oak. All of these work well together and the ethanol goes away quickly. The finish is kind of quick but it is pleasant with woody notes and vanilla. It does make a very good Old Fashion and it holds up well in the drink. In Manhattan, it is also very good with the flavors working well. Overall, this is a nice bourbon that reminds me of regular Bulleit Bourbon but that is not a bad thing. Enjoy.

Well this was a pleasant surprise. I can’t remember the last new distillery that is distilling and aging its own bourbon that actually tasted good! New Riff maybe? Gotta be 5 years or more. Nose: Vanilla, soft sweet oak, hints of cereal & barley grains, maple syrup Taste: More vanilla and baking spices, a hint of mint, honey and grass Finish: short but decently smooth for such a new distilled bourbon that says they distilled and aged it themselves. For $40 would I choose this over Elijah Craig, Makers 46 or Woodford? No, those staples are called that for a reason. but this is a nice daily sipper that I’ll definitely try again soon. Interesting note: water opens up the grassy notes on the nose but doesn’t do much for the taste.

PayDay candy bar on the nose with a bit of cinnamon. Really complex for the money as it changes to more of a candy red hot (yeah …still cinnamon). On the taste, really pleasant and get less of the candy note but a really nice cinnamon and warming on the front of the palate. I usually get a strong raison but not on this pour. Finish is very warming and longish. This is a definite buy for the money. Thanks to my buddy Derek for sending me a bottle. He’s a great friend!

Mild nose with hints of vanilla and oak. Taste is a bit thin and not a lot of depth to dive into. This bourbon is not pretending to be anything other than it is. Sweet on initial taste. A little thin in body with an oak finish. The finish is minimal. Some have compared this to Buffalo Trace but i would disagree. It lacks the flavors of Buffalo Trace that allows it to be sipped neat. This bourbon is good for cocktails.
