I was very excited to get into this one ever since Green River announced its release. Admittedly Iām not the worldās biggest fan of wheated bourbons but Weller FP is up there for one of my all time favorites and Iām hoping this can hold itās own for a significantly lower price. Nose: rich caramel, oak, and vanilla with virtually no burn. Itās very subtle and mellow which I actually like a lot, it doesnāt punch you in the nose as much as other full proof offerings might (including Weller FP) Taste: I am really surprised by this one. Buttery oak and vanilla hit you right off the bat, no hint of burn or astringency whatsoever. Following this is the main āflavoringā if you will. Big hits of smooth caramel corn that lingers for 10-15 seconds before leading to a satisfying finish. No burn, minimal tannin throughout. I would guess this is closer to the 95-105 proof range if I had to guess off of a blind taste test, and I mean that in a good way. I feel as though this is a nice change of pace from full proof āflavor bombsā like Stagg Jr (which obviously have a higher proof contributing) Final thoughts: I went into this review expecting something similar to Weller FP but I was pleasantly surprised by the mellowness of this pour. For $50 this is excellent value and itās low enough proof that it might not be as intimidating as other full proof products out there. Very buttery and smooth with notes of caramel, vanilla, and mild oakiness throughout. Would definitely recommend if you like FP products and even if you donāt, there are definitely worse ways to blow $50 so itās worth a try in my book
Green River Full Proof is a NAS blend of five-to-seven-year barrels (mashbill 70% Corn, 21% Rye, 9% Malted Barley?) from select warehouses at Green Riverās Owensboro, KY distillery. This bottle, bought in March 2025, is 118.1 proof, $50. Tasting neat. Chestnut color and rather thin coating legs in the glass. Classic aroma of vanilla, caramel, and oak make up the foundation of this bourbon's nose. Classic flavors on the palate as well. Burnt sugar caramel, oak char, cherry, and an ethanol bloom that is quite reasonable. Dark dried fruit, vanilla oak, and grassy rye spice. Mouthfeel is thin but feels more oily as you slide into the finish--spicy and barrel char, then mint and a hint of sour. Ice rounds out the ethanol and gives this a richer flavor. Classic bourbon flavors in this bottle. Not that complicated, but solid, full proof, 7-ish years and $50?! That's a great buy for this quality bourbon, and adds a quarter star to my review. Will revisit this as I enjoy the bottle.
58.65% abv; 117.3 proof Open 11 months Nose - Bright caramel, fake vanilla, light cinnamon, white pepper, medicinal cherry, light oak, and medium ethanol. Palate - Caramel and vanilla flavoring, cherry cough drops, sharp oak, and light baking spices. Finish is medium with hot and spicy oak, white pepper, fake caramel. fake vanilla, Red Hots, and medium ethanol. This is the most overrated release I've tried in the last year. I've seen people say this is better than Rare Breed or Elijah Craig, which I find ridiculous. I bought this pretty soon after release and have been able to taste 5-6 year old single barrel picks from multiple liquor stores, and they all taste shiny and young. Honestly I never thought I would say something like this, I like the 95 proof bourbon better. Maybe in a couple of years as this product gets closer to 8 years, it will be able to fully compete with the barrel proof bourbons from the big distilleries, but it isn't there yet.
Aroma - Rye notes are really quite dominant here (mint, fresh baked rye bread). Thereās a slight citrus note here. Some anise, black licorice notes from time to time. Alcohol presence is well hidden. Taste - Alcohol dominates from start to finish. In fact that is all I taste on the finish. Extremely proof. Rye notes are noticed here, slightly hint of mint and bubblegum. Iām getting some vanilla and oak but it is not that much. Quite bland and lacks complexity. Overall - this drinks exceptionally hot. Thereās not enough body or flavor to offset the proof. Jack Daniels BP is by far a better drink even at much high proofs because the viscosity and the flavor profile is off the charts. This Green River doesnāt have that. I had high hopes after seeing several YouTubers speak glowingly about it, but Iām not all that impressed to be completely honest.
GREEN RIVER FULL PROOF GLASS: Glencairn NOSE: Lots of spice. Dry Corn and Oak with Orange Oil, Brown Sugar, Hay and Black Pepper. NEAT: The Spiciness transfers. Iām getting Wild Turkey vibes here. Nutmeg, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Bitter Orange Peel, and Oak Spice. Big KYHug with Cinnamon and Spicy Oak Tannins on the finish. You also get some Pepper (not black, but hot pepper) Burn on the lingering aftertaste. SPLASH: A little water and the bitterness becomes a little too prominent. Brave the spice and drink this neat. VERDICT: Went into this one completely blind, and was a bit surprised by how much I liked it. Under $50 for a Barrel Proof alleged to be 7āish years old from a smaller distillery is a welcome development. Not something Iāll drink often, but a good bottle to have on hand.
