Iron Fish Bourbon Finished in Maple Syrup Barrels
About this bottle
Michigan's Iron Fish Distillery makes this expression with a bourbon made from corn, rye, and malted barley matured in traditional charred oak casks. They source maple syrup from their neighbors the Griner Family Sugar Bush and fill that into ex-bourbon barrels. Those maple syrup barrels are then dumped and filled with bourbon for an additional year of aging.

Aroma - slighly oaky. Lots of youthful tones here. Quite a bit of herbal tea notes as well. Touch of cinnamon. Taste - whereâs the flavor?! What the hell??? I feel the alcohol heat on my gums but there is absolutely nothing to this whiskey. Overall - not sure Iâve ever experienced this before. But there is nothing to this palate other than a slight alcohol burn. There is nothing from the beginning, nothing mid palate or in the finish. It is a head scratcher.. the maple isnât even present.
WellâŠdefinitely overrated. Get an initial burn as if a higher proof, but tastes of corn, rye & oakâŠ.thatâs about it. And just when you think the taste falls flat, you get a hint of maple at the end. Not very good for Sippin neat. however quickly made a Manhattan with it and itâs going down fairly nice.
Sweet nose small amounts of maple with vanilla. Smooth from start to finish like a wheater, with plenty of caramel, vanilla and some spice that balanced well. Small maple note at the end. Wish it had a longer finish. Easy drinker. This one is a Meijer Store pick from Traverse City 86 proof.
Definitely get the maple syrup on the nose. The flavor is sweet, but not overly. You get a little maple syrup on the front of the taste and a little bit of spice on the backend. Also a bit of vanilla in the aftertaste. Not an everyday sipper, but a nice change of pace whiskey.
The first taste hits like higher proof than just 86. Once the harsh corn, rye, and barley burn off they eventually give way to a smooth maple finish. Great for mixing into an old fashioned, but tastes like it should cost $10 less if sipping neat.
